Description of the project:

The project site in V.le Isonzo in Milan is placed near the Campus Bocconi, to the central university building in via Sarfatti, to the dismantled “Centrale del latte” (dairy farm) – to be converted to make place for the new campus, and to Parco Ravizza. This project is to be intended as a functional complement to the new campus development.
The project is placed where the ring road brings to a close the continuity of the front of the existing buildings to create the great urban void defined by Piazza Trieste and the rail yard.
The project strategy implied the realization of a single-unit student accomodation building through a renovation of a former existing “T-shaped” construction, a new tower building overlooking Piazza Trieste, and a linking component between the two.
The plan implies for the renovated building to be ascribed as a hotel with 97 single-bedrooms, whilst the new “tower” building falls into a different category, namely an apartment building, accommodating 116 students. In total the whole development can accommodate 213 students.
The 5-storeys T-shaped renovated building and the 12-storeys new tower building are linked through a double height unit which includes the access doors, and the main common spaces and services.
The three building components surround the garden which faces south towards the rail yard.
The common and service areas include a reception, administration & management office, tv rooms, a gym, study areas and a ball room, which extend themselves along the ground and lower ground floors. In addition to the overstated areas the first level (1st to 3rd floors) of the tower building also includes study rooms and a enclosed garden.
A relax and a group study area have been planned on the second level (4th to 6th floors).
And on the third level (7th to 9th floors) a walkway overlooking the triple height area.
The overstated accommodation’s areas are the core aggregation space for the resident students.
All the triple height areas are characterized by a glass window opening, thus recreating a conservatory effect facing the town centre.
The project was been developed according to L. 338/2000 standards and financed by the MIUR (Ministry of Education and Research) and the regional district of Lombardy.
The total cost of the 8800 sq.m development accounts to € 11 mil. Thus 1.250 €/sq.m.
The new development employs the best cost-management and energy efficient standards among the similar construction types in the region.
It’s features inspired by sustainability follow hotel and hospitality sector’s management criteria, access control for safety reasons, and climate and temperature setting in rooms and common areas.
