The complex formation of the so-called “le Murate” dates back to 1424, when suor Apollonia and her sisters moving from bridge piers Rubaconte to a house in Via Ghibelline in the district of Santa Croce. The convent phase continues until the transformation in prison, operated by the architect Domenico Giraldi in the second half of the nineteenth century. The third phase of the life of “le Murate” begins with the closure of the prison in 1983, and finally the year 2000, the starting date of its recovery.
The recovery of “le Murate” starts with the unitary project, approved in September 1998, which allocates buildings in different functions: shops, social spaces, public plazas and pedestrian walkways on the ground floor, offices, but most importantly, given the available funding ERP, public residences in all upper floors. A group of municipal technicians worked in parallel with UNESCO and architect Renzo Piano and are coordinated by the architects Mario and Roberto Melosi Pittalis. The group drafted the project which has been implemented in stages, the last of which ended in May 2013.
The overall project is summarized in the general themes that have been defined for brevity “INSPIRATIONS” from which descend the “ordering principles” set out to address the priorities and order of operations

– Covered walkways and porches to over 240 linear meters;
– A guest municipal sleeps 24;
– More than 800 square meters for offices and shops “cultural” to 560 mq;
– A restaurant and a coffee literary 430 mq;
– A center for contemporary art by more than 1,300 mq;
– A business incubator technologically advanced in the cultural sector;
– Public hall for more than four rooms 940 sqm with audio / video equipment;
– Have been included 9 lifts, 8 staircases and planted 18 large trees.
