Description of the project:

Volta Center is positioned in a former industrial area and can be seen as a new starting point for the transformation of the neighbourhood into an urban residential area. The sculptural form of the building changes from sharp edge into free flow. Within this ambivalence the building is an answer to the various conditions of the urban space.

From the main access road the house appears as a round tower. The west elevation develops into a zig-zag form to widen the street space continuously towards the main open square, where a conical cut façade evokes a rotation into a horizontal dynamic. The square of the railway station will become a vital public space. The undercut can be seen as an open gesture from far.

The upper floors are accessible from the sides. Five staircases lead to the 74 apartments, which are at the same time, orientated towards the city and the inner courts. One of the courts is completely introverted, the second one opened, being recognised as a gap in the surrounding wall. Due to high density of the apartment block the inner courts are formed in polygonal geometries to provide special flow and prevent the direct rectangular view from one side to the other. The building facade is constructed with light concrete. One single wall layer of 40cm is structural and can at the same time provide the necessary heat and sound buffer.
